Sanding Line Operator

Job Summary

The Sander Operator’s span of control includes the panel in-feed and out-feed mechanisms, sanders, and tongue & groove shaper used in the production of finished panels. The T&G Operator is responsible for assuring quality standards are met in the production of T&G panels or any panel which requires a finished surface. Responsible for accurate stacking of finished material according to size and grade.

Job Description

Principal Duties & Responsibilities
1. Lubricate and inspect equipment for proper operations.  Check:
a. Air Pressure.
b. Line Speeds.
c. Sanding Unit, Pressures and Belts.
d. Edge Coating Equipment.
e. Pressures and Settings on tongue and groove machine and heads.
f. Stacker Operation.
g. All Other Sanding Related Equipment.
2. Check and record on the production report all panels through operation for:
a. Dimensions (width, length, and thickness).
b. Quality of cut on tongue and groove heads.
c. Legibility of panel grade mark.
3. If deviation from standard is found, shut down and correct problem and notify Shift Finishing Lead or 
       Shift Production Team Leader.
4. Grade panels in accordance with plant and TECO  grading rules and records in grade-out section 
       of production report upon completion of shift.
5. Assist the Maintenance Department in the repair of any breakdown that occurs during the operation of
       the equipment.
6. Operate forklift to feed equipment.
7. Maintain cleanliness of work area.
8. Perform general plant clean up and assist other areas when sanding tongue and groove line is not in operation.
9. Set up and operate branding equipment.  Do routine preventative maintenance (PM) and cleaning   of heads.
10. Setup Sander to accommodate running of specialty products.
11. Serve as a Leader during shutdown times and direct clean up, re-grade, etc.
12. Take leadership role during maintenance days to ensure the following items are done;
a. Clean Paint Booth.
b. Blowing Out from under Conveyors.
c. Preventative Maintenance done on the Sander-Strapper Paint Booths.
d. Check to make sure smoothing bar is ready for operation when needed.
13. Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Preferred Competencies
High School Diploma or GED required. 
Major Challenges
Work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions often exposed to heat, cold, inclement weather, grease, oils, dust and dirty working conditions.  Work involves standing, climbing, walking on elevated catwalks and inactive conveyors, and occasionally lifting heavy objects (50 lbs. or more).
EHS Requirements:
*Monitor air and water discharges from site to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and monitor process operations for evidence of excessive use of fuel, water, and other natural resources.
* *Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and corporate environmental and safety regulations, and permit issues (air, water, etc.).  Ensure that proper documentation is completed for any safety or environmental required monitoring in your area of responsibility.  Report inconsistencies as appropriate.
*Attend all federal, state and company mandated training, read and comply with Job Risk Analysis (JRA) (formally known as JHA - Job Hazard Analysis or JSA - Job Safety Analysis) information that applies to areas in which you work, wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) while on the job, and report /or correct any unsafe condition that you may observe.  Report all injuries to your supervisor immediately.
*Adhere to all Safety & Environmental Training.
Be aware of and know how to access the JM Huber EHS Policy, the Minimum Mandatory Standards and Requirements (MMSR’s) and HEW Environmental, Health, and Safety Management System (EHSMS) procedures.  Comply with MMSRs and HEW EHSMS procedures and report all non-conformances to your supervisor or manager. 
*Incorporate environmental, health and safety requirements into every day decision making.
Assist as required in the development and administration of environmental, safety and health policies and programs.  Lead efforts to increase continuous safety and health environmental conscientiousness, identify potential hazards, investigate safety and/or environmental incidents and initiate necessary changes identified through “near hit” incident investigations.  Thoroughly investigate any work-related injuries and record it appropriately.  Plan, develop and lead safety and environmental awareness meetings.  Ensure that the personnel, activities, equipment, and areas under your management are in compliance with applicable federal, state, local and corporate regulations and policies.
